God created marriage as a beautiful gift to mankind and for the purpose of procreation, pleasure and existence.
Scripture is clear in that any sexual relation outside of the bounds of marriage, between one man and one woman, is an abomination and contrary to God’s design.
Many voices have tried to deny what God really said about marriage, they have tried to redefine and reinterpret Scripture so it would say what they want it to say to make their alternate definition of marriage acceptable. In this article you will see clearly, from Scripture, that God’s design and intent for marriage has and will always be between one man and one woman.
(Scripture underline and bold emphasis mine)
Marriage was designed to be between one man and one woman:
Genesis 2:18, 21-24 (NKJV)
18 And the Lord God said, “ It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
•Comparable meaning ‘part opposite’ or ‘counterpart’; The verses that follow reveal clearly that this was to be a woman.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
•The original Hebrew word for woman can and is also often translated as wife or female, which we will see in verse 24.
•This hebrew word is gender-specific and cannot mean anything other than a woman.
•There are no other passages in Scripture that mention marriage involving anyone or anything other than a man and a woman. An asexual relationship can never reproduce offspring from within itself and can therefore never really represent a true family as God intended for it to be.
23 And Adam said:
“ This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
•The original hebrew word for wife here is the very same one translated as woman in verse 22 and 23.
Marriage then, is clearly defined here by God as being between one man and one woman.
Jesus made a reference to this portion of Scripture and clearly reemphasized God’s design for marriage to be between one man and one woman:
Matthew 19:4-6 (Message)
4 He answered, “Haven’t you read in your Bible that the Creator originally made man and woman for each other, male and female? 5 And because of this, a man leaves father and mother and is firmly bonded to his wife, becoming one flesh––no longer two bodies but one. 6 Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart.
•The same fact is found and verified in Mark 10:6-9.
New Covenant Scripture that emphasizes God’s original design for marriage (between one man and one woman):
1 Corinthians 7:2 (NKJV)
Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.
Romans 1:26-27 (Message)
26 Worse followed. Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either―women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men. 27 Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men―all lust, no love. And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it―emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches.
Hebrews 13:4 (Message)
Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex.
As believers, we cannot and must not ignore God. We need to trust Him with our lives and our view of marriage. We need to stand for it in love, not judging anyone, but judging and correcting their erroneous definition and view of marriage as opportunities present themselves. It is our responsibility and calling.
It is not hateful, it is not unloving, it is not judgmental for the church to stand against that which defies God’s Word. It is our duty and our God-given responsibility.
One of the best ways believers can stand for and defend marriage between one man and one woman is by living it out with the honor and respect God wants us to. Not by quitting on it when the going gets tough or when someone else entices with greater attraction or intent, but by sticking it out and trusting God and his sufficient grace to honor our vows and commitment!
The best thing believers can do when faced with an opposing view on marriage is display the very love and grace of God which drew them into a relationship with God, to start off with. Without compromise, but letting God win the battle on our behalf as we take a stand.
Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.
1 Peter 3:15-16 (NLT)
15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.
Just like a parent who does not stop loving his or her children because they do wrong, but hates the wrong done, so too we must love those who try to redefine marriage, but stand against it; This is what loving a person but hating sin looks like!
The focus of the church should not be on condemning people but on loving and pointing them to Jesus Christ and the Finished Work of the Cross, for that is the ultimate solution to every problem and controversy we face in society!
